About Miami
Attractions in Miami
Mango's Tropical Cafe
From the street at Mango's entrance you can feel the spicy beat and catch glimpses of the open-air courtyard inside. You could play it safe by joining the curious crowd, but why not shed your inhibitions, make your way onto the packed dance floor and join the bumping, grinding and booty-shaking? Live bands play salsa, reggae and merengue til the early hours.
Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Recreation Park
This wildish wetland park showcases the extensive barrier-island ecosystem. There are plenty of walkways, boardwalks, bike trails, relatively secluded beaches, covered picnic areas and even a little cafe selling decent soups and sandwiches. At the park's southern tip is the Cape Florida Lighthouse, built in 1845.
Rascal House
A parking lot attendant meets you in a golf cart to whisk you to the front door. Inside, Wolfie Cohen's nostalgic 1954 Miami eatery has sassy service, classic swivel stools at the counter and Naugahyde booths. Relish the roast brisket, latkes, blintzes, beet borscht and Lake Erie whitefish salad. The grilled salmon and Reuben sandwiches are also reliable.
Caffe Abbracci
Abbracci embraces you warmly, from the time you make a reservation to the moment you're walking out the door, a satisfied customer. This dark, elegant and upmarket eatery serves some of the best northern Italian food in the city. Pasta is fresh, antipasto plentiful, veal a speciality and the tiramisu a delight.
Miami Seaquarium
This fine 15-hectare (38-acre) marine life park excels in preserving, protecting and educating us about aquatic creatures. Shows and exhibits include a tropical reef; the Shark Channel, with feeding presentations; and Discovery Bay, a natural mangrove habitat that serves as a refuge for rehabilitating rescued sea turtles.
Mac's Club Deuce Bar
The oldest bar in Miami Beach, established in 1926, the Deuce is a real neighbourhood bar and hype-free zone. There's no posing here, and the atmosphere, though seedy, feels real. The dark but welcoming room has a pool table, jukebox, reasonably priced beer and no-nonsense service.
Tantra
One of South Beach's coolest celebrity hot spots, Tantra is based on the premise that all senses are to be awakened...and it certainly delivers in the visual, aural and taste departments. Large portions of eclectic cuisine like Thai spiced duck confit with an orange-scented cucumber salad share the stage with Moroccan spiced lamb with mint and mango.
Art Deco Welcome Center
Be sure to stop in here to get a sense of the much beloved but often misunderstood historic Art Deco District. You'll find an informative permanent exhibit in the gallery, a bevy of walking tours you can get on board for, and a very well stocked gift shop hawking souvenirs from old-fashioned postcards to deco-style jewellery.
Holocaust Memorial
It's impossible to overstate the impact of this memorial dedicated to the six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust. Dramatically realised by sculptor Kenneth Treister, this elaborate and exquisitely detailed memorial is a testament to humankind's perseverance and the hope for a better world.
Noir Bar
On the 18th floor of this sleek Downtown high-rise you'll find Noir Bar: a dark and sexy lounge, all black except for splashes of orange and red which come courtesy of the geometric candles along the bar. Be sure to saunter into the lobby after a few drinks, where you can peer over the bay and into the night sky through a high-powered telescope.
Vizcaya Museum & Gardens
This opulent Italian Renaissance-style villa was built for industrialist James Deering in 1916. The villa brims with 15th- to 19th-century furniture, tapestries, paintings and decorative arts, while the seaside grounds feature splendid gardens, beautiful fountains, sculptures, elegant pools, a charming gazebo, canals running everywhere and lots of trails.
